During the 1970's, fast food hamburgers were growing in popularity, but all these restaurants had one thing in common. If you ordered a hamburger, whether you liked it or not, you received a small, gray-colored patty covered with condiments that was chosen for you. However, every guest had their preference about their hamburger topping. For instance, Philip Romano hated onions and didn't want them on or near his hamburger. As a child, your mom probably grilled the patty, placed it on a bun, then allowed you to determine whether to put fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise or even jalapenos (or something else spicy in flavor). We felt that YOU should build YOUR own burger the way YOU wanted it.
It became apparent that in order to give your guests the best hamburger, you had to provide a method for them to choose their toppings. It had to be FRESH and of the highest quality available. Thus Philip created a FRESH PRODUCE BAR where guests could build their own "WORLD'S GREATEST HAMBURGERS". The guests should be able to get both sliced and diced tomatoes and onions and leaf lettuce. Because our first restaurant was in San Antonio, Texas, the local guests often requested popular toppings such as Pico De Gallo, hot sauce and jalapenos. As the say, "Some like it hot; some not." Of course, pickles just had to be there. Additional unique items such as melted cheese sauces, our special "Spud Spice", and "Mother Fuddruckers Mustard" were created to assist guests in making their "WORLD'S GREATEST HAMBURGER".
